Some Like it Hot and The Great Gatsby are similar and different in many ways. Many of the characters have clear similarities with each other. Junior, Joe’s rich persona, is similar with Gatsby because they are both using their wealth to impress the girl of their dreams. Daphne is similar to Nick because they are both sidekicks to the main characters in the stories. Sugar is similar to Daisy because they both are interested in rich men. Osgood is similar to Tom due to the fact that they both have a lot of money without doing a lot of work. They were different because the characters in Some Like it Hot are more humorous that in The Great Gatsby. In Some Like it Hot there is a love triangle similar to the one in The Great Gatsby. The themes are different because one is more about crime and morality while the other is more about love, romance, and marriage. There is also more of a focus on social class in The Great Gatsby than in Some Like it Hot.

1. What is the significance of the story’s title?

The story’s title is significant because it is taking place in a foreign country. He is also trying to learn Italian and finds it easy until he has to learn the grammar. This relates to the rehabilitation of his leg because he finds it easy when he works around it, but when he has to rebuild his leg it is more difficult. Their injuries set them apart from everyone else.

2. Which character do you think best represents the “Hemingway hero”? Why?

The character that best represents the “Hemingway hero” is the major. He is dealing with the most suffering because of the loss of his wife and his hand. He also suffers with grace and dignity because he realizes that it most likely will not be completely healed but he does not give up and continues to fight.

3. What can you infer about the photographs the doctor hangs up? What is the significance of the major’s reaction?

You can infer that the photographs that the doctor hangs up are not actually habilitated hands. It is possible to infer this because the narrator says that he was under the impression that they were the first to use the machines. The major reacts by not believe the images. This is significant because it shows that he realizes that he will most likely not get better, but he still continues to use the machines and tries to get better.

1. What is the significance of the poem’s epigraph? How does it relate to Prufrock?

The poem’s epigraph is significant because it is telling the reader is private and internal. It relates to Prufrock because it is saying that the information is personal and the reader is given insight into his life. It also relates because Prufrock might be ashamed of his story.

2. Make a list of questions that Prufrock asks. Do you see a pattern/theme to these questions or are they random?

All of the questions that Prufrock asks are due to his doubt, uncertainty, and anxiety.

3. What do you think is Prufrock’s main flaw/problem?

Prufrock’s main problem is that he is not the protagonist of his life and that he sometimes comes off as ridiculous and foolish. He has very low self-esteem.

4. Why do you think this is called a love song? In what way is it a love song?

This is called a love song because it is ironic. He is lonely and has low self-esteem. It is a love song about him being alone and by himself. The fact that it is called a love song is irony.
